Application Process and Membership Categories

Individuals eligible for membership in the AAMP include: (a) licensed dentists in good standing in the country in which they practice and retain citizenship, (b) persons licensed, registered or otherwise permitted by law to practice as dental or maxillofacial prosthetic technicians who are involved in only non-independent or indirect patient care as directed or prescribed by a licensed dentist. All applicants must be supported by recommendation of two Fellows of the Academy. Any individual who meets the membership requirements must make application in writing on the Academy membership form. This form is available from the Executive Secretary or by direct download from this web site. Information entered on the application form must be typewritten. Membership categories with their requirements as defined by the current AAMP Bylaws are described below.

The Executive Secretary will notify all applicants of the action taken by this Academy relative to their applications.   The Executive Secretary will furnish each Associate Fellow with a copy of the Bylaws of the Academy.   An applicant may attend the scientific program sessions of any Academy annual meeting while awaiting completion or action upon their application for Academy Membership and guest fees shall be waived.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSOCIATE FELLOW:

  1. Upon successfully completing of an ADA accredited prosthodontic program and becoming educationally qualified for certification by the American Board of Prosthodontics, a candidate may apply for Associate Fellow status.  

  2. Be a licensed dentist in the country in which they practice and retain citizenship.

  3. Be a member in good standing in the American Dental Association or an equivalent organization in the country in which they practice and retain citizenship.

  4. The individual must demonstrate evidence of interest in maxillofacial prosthetics through clinical, educational, or research endeavors.

  5. Associate members may be elevated to full Fellow status in three years if they meet the requirements for full Fellow upon such recommendation by the Fellowship Committee.

  6. First year AAMP membership dues will be waived for approved applications received within one year of the completion of any ADA accredited prosthodontic training program.   This waiver will also include the JPD subscription fee for the first membership year.

  7. An applicant accepted for membership and joining after one year of completing their program will be charged only one-third of the AAMP membership dues for their first year of membership.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ELEVATION TO FELLOW

A candidate is eligible for elevation from Associate member to full Fellow status when they have fulfilled the following requirements:

  1. An individual may be considered for Fellow after a period of three years from the date of acceptance as an Associate Fellow, and must have demonstrated a continuing interest in the field of maxillofacial prosthetics through essays, articles, clinics, attendance at national and local meetings.

  2. Either: 
    • Successfully complete an American Dental Association accredited formal training program in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics; OR

    • Submit three (3) patient histories from a selection of maxillofacial subjects in the patient history format described at the end of this website page. The histories should best indicate the applicant's interest and abilities in maxillofacial prosthetics.

  3. Submit a scientific paper on any phase of maxillofacial prosthetics or a presentation of a paper at an Annual Scientific Meeting of the Academy; however, a poster presentation may be considered equivalent to the presentation of a paper.

  4. Remain in good standing in the American Dental Association or equivalent organization and in the Academy.  

  5. Upon recommendation of the Fellowship Committee and approval of the Board of Directors and receipt of the initiation fee as determined by the Board, an Associate Fellow may be elevated to Fellow.

  6. The initiation fee for elevation from Associate to Full Fellow shall be waived until determined otherwise by the Board of Directors.

REQUIREMENTS FOR AFFILIATE FELLOW

  1. Candidates for Affiliate Fellow shall be qualified dentists living in countries other than the United States or Canada.

  2. Be members in good standing of a recognized dental society in their own country.

  3. Have a current demonstrable background and show evidence of interest in the clinical practice, research or educational aspects of maxillofacial prosthetics.  

  4. Submit three (3) patient histories which should be selected to best indicate diversity of interest and abilities in maxillofacial prosthetics.   These histories should follow the format described at the end of this website page.  

  5. The Affiliate Fellow must be recommended by the Fellowship Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.

  6. Any Affiliate Fellow who goes on to meet the requirements for Associate Fellow or Fellow can request a change in membership status. This is done by petitioning the Fellowship Committee in writing requesting a review of the Affiliate Fellow's membership status.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DENTAL OR MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHETIC TECHNICIAN MEMBERS  

  1. Be licensed, registered or otherwise permitted by law to practice as a dental or maxillofacial prosthetic technician.
  2. Be involved in patient care solely as directed or prescribed by licensed and qualified dentists.
  3. Must be recommended for membership by one Fellow and a second Fellow or Associate Fellow.  
  4. Submit three patient case reports that demonstrate experience in providing some aspect of maxillofacial prosthetic technical procedures.  
  5. The applicant will present a paper or table clinic at an annual session meeting involving some aspect of maxillofacial prosthetic technical procedures.  
The dental and maxillofacial prosthetic technician auxiliary will pay dues but is ineligible to vote or hold office

 REQUIREMENTS FOR LIFE FELLOW

Active Fellow of the Academy in good standing who has reached the age of 65, or has reached the age of 62 and is fully retired, or has reached the age of 60 with 25 years of uninterrupted membership. Eligible Fellows must request in writing, through the Executive Secretary, a change in status from Fellow to Life Fellow. Approval must be approved by the Board of Directors.

REQUIREMENTS FOR RETIRED FELLOW

Fellow of the Academy who is disabled, or for other valid reasons (as determined by the Board of Directors), is prevented from engaging in active practice or teaching in an accredited dental school. The Fellow must request in writing, through the Executive Secretary, a change in status from Fellow to Retired Fellow. Approval must be approved by the Board of Directors.

Manuscript guidelines for patient care histories and scientific paper

Three patient care case reports are required and should demonstrate a variety of maxillofacial prosthetic skills and experiences. A case report should include a title page, an introduction to the specific patient need being addressed, medical history with significant factors identified, dental history and current dental status, description of care provided identifying special techniques and materials used, and an outcome or summary. Photographs to enhance the text material are desirable. Patient care case reports prepared as a resident of a Graduate dental training program or published in a refereed dental journal may be used to meet the requirements of the AAMP Fellowship Committee.

A scientific paper maybe a paper prepared while in graduate training. The scientific paper may be on any topic of interest in the field of dentistry or medicine; it need not be limited to maxillofacial prosthetics. This could include a Masters Thesis or scientific publication. A scientific paper should have an introduction, review of literature, materials & methods, results, discussion, summary and conclusions.
